Joint Injections

What is a pain relief injection?

Pain relief injections are used to identify the source of pain as well as treat a painful injury or condition.

How long will the pain relief injection last?

Pain relief injections are not always a permanent pain relief treatment; however they may bring relief for several weeks or months. If the pain returns pain relief injections can be repeated.

What are the different types of pain relief injections?

There are four different types of pain relief injections which are:

  • Joint injections – primarily used to treat arthritis pain. One to three injections are needed and will last for 4-6 months
  • Soft tissue injections – used to treat painful Bursitis typically found in the shoulder, elbow, and hip
  • Trigger point injections – utilized when your muscles are sensitive and painful to the touch
  • Nerve block injections – prevent pain signals from reaching the brain. Often used for short term relief. However, if a steroid is used it may provide longer pain relief

What happens during the pain relief injection procedure?

Pain relief injections typically contain a steroid and a local anesthetic. Patients will remain awake during the pain relief injection procedure, but will be given local anesthetic to numb the skin before the pain relief injection is given. A small needle is inserted and the medication is injected . The pain relief injection procedure takes only a few minutes followed by a short recovery period.

What happens after the pain relief injection?

You will need to arrange transportation home following the pain relief injection procedure. The pain relief injection site may be sore for a few days, which can be treated by applying moist heat and ice for a day or two. It is important to rest the area following the pain relief injection procedure. Gentle stretching is often beneficial.
