August 6, 2009 (Charlotte, NC)– Chronic back pain plagues millions of Americans each year. As technology has improved, so has the effectiveness of spinal cord stimulators.
Southeast Pain and Spine Care has become the regional expert at this technique for chronic back pain, performing several hundred procedures a year. And as one of the few drug-free alternative of pain relief, Southeast Pain and Spine Care is encouraged by the success rate of the procedure.
“Over the last two years I’ve found the technology has dramatically improved, and patients getting substantially better results,” said Dr. Thomas Heil, director of Southeast Pain and Spine Care. “Spinal cord stimulators are a life changing option for many people in pain.”

During the procedure, a small electronic device is implanted under the patient’s skin. Wires are connected to a strip of electrodes placed on the spinal cord. The electrodes pump low-voltage electrical pulses, which alter the pain signals in the spinal cord and provide partial or complete pain relief.
Dr. Heil believes these stimulators are an excellent option for two main reasons. “First, you get to test drive the equipment since the permanent device is implanted only after the patient has had a simple trial stimulator system placed,” he explains. “Patients literally test the device for up to a week at home, and only if they are amazed with the amount of pain relief they get with the stimulator is a permanent implant done.
Second, if you’ve had surgery and are still in pain, this is without a doubt the most effective next step for many patients,” Dr. Heil added.
