He took two years off from his college studies for full time missionary work, where he also solidified his Spanish language skills. He next pursued his medical degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Afterward, he furthered his training for five years in New England at the Ivy League’s Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center where he did his intern year, anesthesiology residency and fellowship in pain management.

Dr. Cunningham and his family moved to Hickory in 2019 when he started at Southeast Pain and Spine Care. He works primarily at the Hickory and Valdese offices. Dr. Cunningham tries to help patients overcome their pain in a way that gives them the most function and highest quality of life possible. When he’s not at work, you will see him running on the sidewalks around town, hiking in the mountains, or spending time at the lake or the beach with his wife and four children.
